ENERGIZE DELAWARE RELEASES VALUE OF SOLAR STUDY REPORT
IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 30, 2025
Dover – This afternoon, Energize Delaware announced the Value of Solar study report findings in accordance with Senate Joint Resolution 3 from the 152nd General Assembly and Senate Joint Resolution 1 from the 153rd General Assembly. The report analyzed the costs and benefits of net metered solar installations in the State to determine if a cost shift was occurring to non-solar customers.
According to the report utilizing publicly available data and information from the electric utilities in Delaware, Delaware’s net metering policy realizes greater financial benefits than costs for all customers by reducing the overall cost of energy, improving grid resilience, and creating additional economic and societal benefits.
The analysis shows net metered solar benefits significantly outweigh costs even when considering only direct benefits, which excludes societal benefits. Direct benefits relate to the value that solar energy provides in avoiding power generation, transmission and distribution expenditures, and other avoided costs whereas societal benefits accrue to the public at large and typically include environmental and health benefits from reduced emissions. Based on the current status quo net metering cap, net direct benefits are $136 million and $1.4 billion in total net benefits. Additionally, every dollar spent on net metering generated $1.28 in direct net benefits.
“We hope this continues as a living document providing new analysis of the behind-the-meter landscape in Delaware,” said Drew Slater, Executive Director of Energize Delaware. “The findings are somewhat surprising in that each megawatt of net metered solar supports 22 local jobs and creates $2.1 million in total value-added benefits to the local economy in addition to the overall benefits exceeding $1 billion. This simply hadn’t been quantified before.”
Energize Delaware believes this to be the first Value of Solar study in the country to include an entire state and every electric utility. The full report is available on the Energize Delaware website at www.energizedelaware.org and their Facebook page.
