Dover – In a first throughout the country, every fire department in the State has received a vehicle fire blanket including Dover Air Force Base and the Air National Guard.
Executive Director Drew Slater states, “At Energize Delaware, we are committed to enhancing safety and resilience in our communities. Providing fire blankets to every fire department in Delaware is one way we can support first responders with essential tools to protect lives and property during emergencies.”
According to 2023 vehicle fire data, there are more gas and hybrid vehicle fires per 100,000 vehicles than by electric vehicles. These blankets can be used regardless of the vehicle fuel type to help extinguish flames, reduce the release of harmful toxic fumes, and protect firefighters.
There are unique challenges in the rare event of an electric battery fire, including the amount of time and resources to put out the fire. Additionally, the first of secondary fires is increased, which can lead to longer time to extinguish flames, increased water consumption, and hazard transporting the vehicles. These blankets help reduce secondary fires and allow for safe vehicle transport while supporting first responders.
The fire blankets were distributed at a demonstration event at the Delaware State Fire School, organized by Atlantic Emergency Solutions and led by industry-leading fire blanket manufacturer, Bridgehill®. Battling electric vehicle fires through traditional methods uses large volumes of water and can take up to several days to fully extinguish while releasing toxic fumes into the environment. Fire blankets can be quickly deployed by firefighters in just minutes, extinguishing flames while containing gases and fumes.
