What is Earth Day?
Earth Day was started in 1970 by Gaylord Nelson, a United States Senator from Wisconsin. The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. Some 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day, with over one billion people taking part each year.
